UNINETT mainly provides services based on the national research network to research and education in Norway. UNINETT was established as a private limited company wholly owned by the Ministry of Education and Research in 1993. UNINETT AS is responsible for development and operation of the research network in Norway. Its primary customer group comprises research and higher education institutions, but services are also provided to other non-commercial institutions related to research or education.

UNINETT also provides dedicated experimental network environments for research on networks or applications of networks and network services. Both production networks and experimental networks are coordinated with international research networks all over the world.

UNINETT has a group of six people dedicated to network research and development, and has been part of IST projects like 6NET and SCAMPI. UNINETT is currently part of the IST LOBSTER project, and also a partner in the Q2S Centre of Excellence.
